2023 Statistics on America's Aging Population

The Administration for Community Living's 2023 Profile of Older Americans is out, showcasing important trends and demographics for those aged 65 and older. Here are some key highlights:

  • In 2022, there were 31.9 million women and 25.9 million men aged 65+
  • This age group represented 17.3% of the population in 2022, expected to grow to 22% by 2040
  • 59% of older adults lived with a spouse/partner, while 28% lived alone in 2023
  • Half of the older population lived in just 9 states, with California, Florida, and Texas leading
  • The 2022 median income was $29,740 ($37,430 for men and $24,630 for women)
  • In 2023, 11.2 million older Americans were part of the labor force
